A B-52 WENT DOWN AT EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE a united states air force b-52 stratofortress crashed shortly after takeoff at edwards air force base in california this morning, sending thick black smoke over the desert and triggering an immediate emergency response before any information about the crew had been released. - edwards afb is not a routine airfield it is the primary flight test center for the entire us air force - a b-52 carries a crew of up to 5 and has been in continuous service since 1955 - shortly after takeoff is the most dangerous phase of any flight military or civilian - thick black smoke over a desert airfield visible from miles away means the wreckage was significant - no casualty information has been released which at this stage means nobody is ready to say everyone is alive the plane has survived 70 years of active service. this morning it didn't make it off the runway.
