It has been learned that the Republic of Cyprus (RoC) will modernize critical air and sea bases on the island using funds supported by the U.S. and the EU. As part of this initiative, the Andreas Papandreou Air Base is set to be expanded, and a helicopter pad is planned for the Evangelos Florakis Naval Base. Although the RoC describes the projects as “humanitarian,” the plan to expand military bases has once again drawn attention to the island in the Eastern Mediterranean.
