Lying in bed late at night, I can’t help but wonder: Is the set of standards society has imposed on us really the only answer to life? How exactly should we live to make our lives truly meaningful? Yet looking around, most people’s lives are quietly drained by this very “standard.” Even Lei Jun, with his tens of billions in wealth, hasn’t escaped its grip—he still must work every day, for himself, his family, and society, according to this “standard.” In school, we were taught not to waste time, so we eliminated all daydreaming, exploration, and passion. After entering the workforce, we were pressured not to dare “lie flat,” trading our health, energy, and freedom for the illusion of “stability.” For most of our lives, we’ve lived according to society’s definition of “the right way,” never daring to try the things we truly want to do or the life we truly want to experience—because we feel we have neither the time nor the permission. I’m increasingly convinced this is nothing but a scam. It has little to do with how much money you have. Even if you earn only 5,000 yuan a month, you can still live the life you truly want. What truly traps us isn’t our bank balance—it’s the mindset rigidly confined by society, the state, and institutional “standards.” We’ve been led to believe that following the prescribed path—school, work, marriage, retirement—is life’s ultimate purpose. But we’ve forgotten: the script of life was meant to be written by us.
