We went to a burial in Akokwa, Imo State, this afternoon. It was the burial of my cousin’s husband’s father. After paying our condolences, we were taken to a compound opposite the VIP tent. From there, we could clearly see everything happening inside. There was loud music, and people were spraying money. One of my relatives decided to walk to the VIP section. At the entrance, the bouncers stopped him because he didn’t have a pass. He tried to explain that it was his in-law’s burial, but they refused to listen. They embarrassed him and even pushed him away. Out of shame, he came back to where we were sitting. Not long after, my cousin came and took all of us into the VIP tent. The same relative the bouncers had stopped is actually very rich, but you wouldn’t know from his dressing. Inside the tent, he gave my cousin five bundles of ₦200 notes. The bouncers noticed him. When we were leaving, one of the bouncers rushed over and said, “Sir, do something for the boys, I’m royal, sir.” My relative ignored him. He brought out ₦5,000 and gave it to a disabled man near the entrance. The bouncer scratched his head and walked away.
