Hashrate

BeginnerLast Updated October 14, 2025

Hashrate is an indicator of the computing power required to validate transactions and mine cryptocurrencies on a blockchain. It is the measure of the level of security a blockchain network provides.

Hashrate is measured in hash per second (h/s) or total hash per second (TH/s) and reveals how many computations the blockchain performs per second. The hashrate or hashing power can be calculated based on the block time - the amount of time it takes to mine a new block.

A higher mining hashrate points to a higher level of protection against malicious attacks, especially majority attacks of 51% attacks. For instance, the high Bitcoin hashrate indicates how resilient the Bitcoin blockchain network is against being compromised by hackers.
