Learn with Tea (TEA): Building the Reward Layer for Open-Source Software

Introduction: Tea Network is a blockchain protocol designed to make open-source software more sustainable. It rewards developers and maintainers based on their real contributions to the software ecosystem, while using staking, reputation, governance, and its own OP Stack Layer 2 to support scalable participation. Originally introduced as a dApp, Tea has evolved into a dedicated Layer 2 network built for open-source coordination and developer rewards.

The Open-Source Economy Needs a New Model

Open-source software is everywhere.
Many applications, developer tools, wallets, protocols, and internet services rely on open-source packages every day. These packages may be maintained by small teams or even individual developers, yet they often become critical infrastructure for much larger systems.
The problem is that open-source value is not always rewarded fairly.
A package can be used by thousands of projects, but its maintainers may still depend on donations, grants, or unpaid volunteer work. Over time, this can create sustainability problems. Important projects may become under-maintained, security issues may be missed, and developers may lose the incentive to continue supporting the tools that others rely on.
Tea Network is designed to address this gap.
Instead of treating open-source as free infrastructure with no clear reward flow, Tea introduces a protocol where projects can register, build reputation, receive support, and earn rewards based on their contribution to the broader ecosystem.

How Tea Measures Contribution

The core idea behind Tea is Proof of Contribution.
Proof of Contribution is Tea’s mechanism for evaluating how much value an open-source project contributes to the software ecosystem. Rather than rewarding projects randomly or only based on popularity, Tea aims to measure contribution and impact more systematically.
A key part of this is teaRank, which helps determine a project’s importance and influence within the network.
For example, a widely used package that supports many other projects may have a higher impact than a project with little adoption. If that package is actively maintained and contributes to the health of the software supply chain, it should be recognized accordingly.
Tea uses this contribution model to direct rewards toward projects that provide real utility.
This creates a healthier incentive system for open-source. Developers are rewarded not just for creating code, but for maintaining useful infrastructure that others depend on.

Staking, Reputation, and Accountability

Tea Network also uses staking and reputation to make the ecosystem more accountable.
Users can stake TEA to support open-source projects. This allows the community to signal which projects they trust and value. Projects that receive support can strengthen their reputation within the network.
At the same time, Tea is not only about positive rewards. It also includes mechanisms for quality control.
If security problems, development issues, or harmful behavior are found in a registered package, community members can make claims with evidence. Depending on the situation, slashing may occur. This means that reputation and staking are not only used for rewards, but also for accountability.
This is important because open-source security is a real issue.
Many projects depend on packages they do not fully audit themselves. If Tea can make package reputation, quality, and risk more visible, it can help improve trust across the software supply chain.

Tea’s Move Into Its Own Layer 2

Tea was first introduced as a dApp, but the project later moved toward becoming its own OP Stack-based Layer 2 network.
This shift matters because open-source rewards and reputation systems require frequent interactions.
Developers may need to register projects, update metadata, claim rewards, participate in governance, respond to reviews, or manage staking. Users may want to support many different packages with small amounts of TEA. If every action is expensive, the system becomes hard to use.
By becoming a dedicated Layer 2, Tea can reduce fees and increase throughput.
The Tea Network uses the OP Stack, the same modular rollup framework associated with the Optimism ecosystem. This gives Tea Ethereum alignment, EVM compatibility, and the ability to settle back to Ethereum while still providing a faster and cheaper user experience.
In simple terms, Tea’s L2 gives the protocol enough room to operate at the scale required by global open-source software.

Developer Identity on Tea

Tea Network introduces a unique identity feature through its GPG address precompile.
GPG has long been used by developers to sign code, verify releases, and prove ownership of software-related identities. Many open-source maintainers already use GPG keys in their existing workflows.
Tea brings this familiar developer identity system on-chain.
Through the GPG precompile, smart contracts on Tea can verify signatures made with GPG public keys. This allows developers to connect their open-source identity with their onchain activity in a more natural way.
For example, a maintainer could use the same GPG key connected to their software releases to interact with Tea Network. This creates a bridge between offchain software reputation and onchain rewards or governance.
This feature is especially relevant for Tea because the protocol is built around open-source contribution. If developers can use identity tools they already understand, the network becomes more practical for real software communities.

What TEA Is Used For

TEA is the native token of Tea Network.
As Tea becomes its own Layer 2, TEA plays a larger role than a normal reward token. It is used as the gas token of the network, meaning users need TEA to pay for transactions such as staking, claiming rewards, registering projects, and interacting with smart contracts.
TEA is also used to support open-source projects through staking. Users can stake TEA to signal trust and support for specific packages or maintainers.
The token also supports governance. TEA holders can participate in decisions about protocol parameters, reward rules, treasury usage, network upgrades, and ecosystem priorities.
In addition, TEA can be used in security-related incentives. For example, vulnerability reporters may need to stake TEA when submitting reports, helping reduce spam and encourage higher-quality contributions.
Overall, TEA connects several important parts of the network:
  • Paying for network activity
  • Supporting open-source projects
  • Rewarding maintainers and contributors
  • Participating in governance
  • Strengthening package quality and security incentives

The Bigger Picture for Tea

Tea is building more than a simple developer reward app.
It is trying to create a dedicated blockchain economy for open-source software. This matters because open-source is one of the foundations of modern technology, but its economic model has remained fragile for a long time.
By combining Proof of Contribution, staking, reputation, project registration, GPG-based identity, and an OP Stack Layer 2, Tea creates infrastructure where open-source contributions can be measured, rewarded, and governed at scale.
For developers, Tea can provide a new reward channel. For users, it offers a way to support the packages they rely on. For the broader software ecosystem, it creates a system where package quality, reputation, and contribution become more visible.
In short, Tea Network is building a reward and coordination layer for open-source software — helping maintainers capture more of the value they create while making the software supply chain more transparent and sustainable.
