What Is Acurast and Why Does Decentralized Compute Matter?
As AI, Web3 automation, and data-intensive applications continue to grow, global demand for computing power is increasing rapidly. Today, most compute resources are controlled by a small number of centralized cloud providers, which creates several structural challenges:
-
Concentration of compute power and single points of failure
-
Limited transparency and verifiability of computation
-
Privacy risks due to reliance on trusted third parties
-
Rising costs as demand scales
Acurast was created to rethink compute from the ground up.
Instead of relying on data centers or servers, Acurast uses smartphones as decentralized compute units. Smartphones are already powerful, widely distributed, and equipped with secure hardware, making them an ideal foundation for a global compute network.
Today, Acurast has:
-
Onboarded 160,000+ real smartphones as compute units
-
Active contributors across 140+ countries
-
A community of 75,000+ “Cloud Rebels”
-
Processed 500+ million on-chain transactions on its testnet
This architecture makes Acurast one of the most decentralized and verifiable compute networks available, already supporting real production workloads rather than experimental use cases.
