Growing Beyond Boundaries: From Delivering Results to Growing a Team
In 2020, when Light Huang joined KuCoin in 2020, he was new to Crypto—and still unconvinced by parts of it. Six years later, he delivered a series of milestone projects, grew from Listing business development to leading Crypto Ecosystem and Partnership.
What has defined that journey is not simply ambition, but the dedication and ownership of his work. Light steps into problems that fall beyond his role, bridges different functions, and builds trust with project partners through steady communication and dependable delivery. When new products, unfamiliar mechanisms, or changing market conditions create uncertainty, he rarely stops at asking who owns the problem. He works to clarify it, bring together the right resources, and move the commitment toward a result.
That trajectory was not his alone. KuCoin is open for Light’s starting point to determine how far he could go. As he proves himself on continuous delivery, the company widened both his mandate and his accountability. When he was promoted to a leader, Light began extending the same trust to his team—giving early-career members access to real business challenges, room to develop their judgment, and the chance to grow into greater independence.
How does individual initiative, institutional trust, and team growth reinforce one another over time? Light’s six years at KuCoin offer one answer.
Beyond Your Own Boundaries
Light’s background in traditional finance had taught him to look first at business models and long-term value. Crypto followed a different logic—one shaped by unfamiliar technologies, new forms of coordination and value that had yet to prove themselves over time. At first, he was not entirely convinced.
But uncertainty did not keep him at a distance. Light was drawn to unfamiliar problems and willing to test his assumptions against the work itself. He moved into frontline Listing BD, where each project became a way to build a more grounded understanding of the industry. The role placed him directly in conversation with project teams and exposed him to shifting market conditions, emerging models and mechanisms that rarely came with established answers.
The security incident of September 26, 2020, changed how he understood the relationships built through that work. In the immediate aftermath, Light and the Listing team reached out to relevant project partners, kept communication moving and sought the support needed for the company’s broader response. Trust that had been built through ordinary business cooperation now produced something more consequential: responsiveness when it mattered.
For Light, the experience widened the meaning of BD. The job was no longer simply to secure a partnership. Over the next several weeks, he continued supporting other teams on internal and user-related matters until the platform resumed operations. What distinguished his contribution was not only his ability to open doors, but his willingness to remain involved after the initial business objective had been met—to help mobilize the relationships he had built and stay with the work until the organization could move forward.
Beyond Platform Boundaries : Greater Trust Earned Through Delivery
Sui was one of the industry’s most closely watched token sale projects at the time—and the first major initiative Light led after stepping into a leadership role. Among a competitive field of platforms, KuCoin was selected as an official exchange partner for the Sui Community Access Program. The partnership reflected KuCoin’s market reach, but it also signaled confidence in the platform’s responsiveness and ability to deliver.
For Light, securing the partnership was only the beginning. The team had just 30 days to move product development, business execution, legal review and compliance preparation forward in parallel. As the project progressed, external requirements continued to evolve, forcing existing plans to be revisited and adjusted at short notice.
KuCoin was also navigating a broader global transition at the time. Team members were working across different locations and time zones, adding another layer of complexity. Based in Thailand, Light operated between the project team and KuCoin’s internal functions, translating shifting requirements into clear actions and keeping multiple teams aligned around the same delivery deadline. KuCoin ultimately completed the project successfully, making Sui one of the most consequential initiatives of Light’s career.
KuCoin did not define Light’s capabilities based on his relatively short experience in Crypto or his starting point in Listing BD. As he continued proving his ability to deliver through different challenges, the company entrusted him with more complex projects, broader resources, and greater ownership of business outcomes.
His remit later expanded beyond individual Listing partnerships to include the Gem product series, Polkadot parachain auctions, the RMRK sale, and Web3 Wallet integrations with Hyperliquid and Polymarket.
What KuCoin offered was more than an upward career path. It gave Light the room to step into more complex problems, mobilize broader resources and take ownership of larger outcomes. He answered that trust through consistent execution and tangible results across a series of critical projects.
No Limits for the Team: Creating Space for Others to Grow
Opportunities move quickly at the front line of the market. A team therefore needs more people who can understand the business, assess the value of a project and, over time, move a partnership forward with greater independence. While experienced colleagues take the lead on critical work, Light also creates entry points for promising early-career talent—starting them with clearly defined responsibilities and giving them the chance to develop judgment through real projects.
In an industry where new products and mechanisms appear constantly, Light does not look only at what a candidate has already done. He considers the experience and professional foundation required for the role, but also whether someone can remain open-minded, absorb new information quickly and revise their thinking as circumstances change. Experienced team members contribute tested methods and risk awareness; those earlier in their careers build professional judgment through genuine interest in the industry, disciplined learning and frontline exposure. For Light, the right candidate must be able to perform in the role today while continuing to grow with the industry.
Once someone joins the team, Light shares the context behind the business, lessons from past projects and the resources needed to get started. He is clear about objectives and guardrails, while leaving room for discussion, experimentation and independent execution. Existing assumptions can be reconsidered when new information emerges, and the team’s relatively flat communication style allows members to develop their own ways of working.
As their understanding deepens, growth becomes more than simply taking on additional tasks. A BD team member may begin by advancing a single Listing, then gradually learn to assess a project’s long-term value and broader ecosystem potential. An operations colleague may move from executing individual tasks to interpreting data, improving processes and contributing to business iteration. The aim is not to keep people in supporting roles, but to help them build a more complete understanding of the work and take ownership of increasingly substantial outcomes.
This approach reflects Light’s own experience at KuCoin. Early in his career, the company focused less on fixed labels or assumptions about where he had started, and more on the judgment and results he demonstrated in real situations. That openness helped shape the way he leads today. He now seeks to offer his team the same opportunity: not defining their limits in advance, but allowing capability to emerge through practice, support and steadily expanding responsibility.
Growing Beyond Boundaries
This year marks Light’s sixth at KuCoin. During that time, he has repeatedly moved beyond the limits of his previous experience and formal role, delivering results that exceeded expectations. KuCoin responded by giving him greater trust and room to operate. Once he became a leader, Light carried that trust forward—offering the same respect and opportunity to others, and helping more team members develop judgment through real business challenges.
The individual answers the platform’s trust through delivery. The platform answers delivery with room to grow. The team carries that commitment forward through its own development—an unspoken compact, renewed each time the work produces a result.
