This event also marks the first major product launch overseen by new CEO John Ternus, who succeeded Tim Cook on September 1. Apple’s first foldable iPhone, temporarily named “iPhone Duo,” is expected to start at approximately $2,000, with the 256GB model as the entry-level configuration, and higher-storage versions potentially reaching close to $3,000. The device features a horizontal folding design, optimized for video viewing when unfolded, and supports split-screen and multitasking functions similar to the iPad. Hardware specifications are anticipated to include the A20 Pro chip and Apple’s proprietary C2 baseband, dual 48MP rear cameras, a 12MP video conferencing camera, support for Apple Pencil, and a magnetic hinge. The product is expected to launch as early as October. Bloomberg reports that foldable phones have historically been limited by high prices, battery life, camera performance, and screen creases, but advancements in supply chains and related technologies are addressing these shortcomings. Apple aims to use the foldable iPhone to establish a new product category and position it as a premium device combining innovation with status symbolism. The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max will retain the traditional flat design, with key upgrades focused on the imaging system, including an expected mechanical aperture for more precise depth control and improved low-light performance. They are also expected to feature the A20 Pro chip, enhanced cooling, and extended battery life. The Dynamic Island will be further reduced in size. Due to memory chip shortages, the prices of the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are expected to increase by $100 each. Apple has previously raised prices for products such as Mac and iPad; this price hike for the iPhone indicates that storage cost pressures are further being passed on to consumers. The Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 are expected to introduce new color options and design adjustments, along with enhanced health and fitness features, including a new Readiness app that provides deeper analysis of heart rate, blood oxygen, and other metrics. AirPods 5 will feature upgraded noise cancellation, while the previously planned high-end AI AirPods with camera sensors have been postponed until next year. For Ternus, this launch is not only a product release but also his first major public appearance since taking over Apple.
