The Huoxing Finance report, on July 31, cited The Wall Street Journal quoting sources stating that Situational Awareness, a hedge fund founded by former OpenAI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner, suffered significant losses in July amid a sharp decline in AI stocks, with its net asset value dropping approximately 67% for the month. The report noted that the fund had heavily invested in AI-related stocks; as these positions declined sharply, the fund was forced to sell most of its equity holdings to raise cash and meet margin calls from lenders. A substantial portion of these positions was acquired by Citadel, led by Ken Griffin. In a letter to investors, Aschenbrenner said, “This month, we let you down.” He attributed part of the losses to short sellers intensifying selling pressure and described the fund as facing pressure akin to a “bank run.” Nevertheless, Situational Awareness had previously seen massive gains, with its year-to-date return peaking at 270% by the end of May; even after the July plunge, it still posted an approximate 80% gain for the year. The report also stated that since its founding about two years ago, Situational Awareness’s assets under management once exceeded $20 billion. Although Aschenbrenner had no prior professional investment experience, his research and influence in the AI field led some investors to view him as a bellwether for AI investing. The fund still holds investments in private AI companies, including Anthropic.
