Thousands of crypto wallets may be at risk, with stolen funds already exceeding $5 million.
Coinspect detected a vulnerability named "Ill Bloom," which does not affect the Bitcoin, Ethereum, or Solana networks themselves, but rather the way seed phrases are generated in certain wallets.
The issue lies in poor randomness—if a seed phrase was generated in a predictable manner, attackers have a higher chance of reconstructing the keys and seizing the funds.
According to initial analysis, one attack on May 27 affected 431 wallets and resulted in the theft of approximately $3.1 million, with additional funds subsequently drained from the compromised addresses.
Preliminary findings suggest that wallets created on hardware devices are not affected by this issue, while older or less popular mobile wallets may be at higher risk.
The key takeaway: the seed phrase is the foundation of security. A wallet may function normally for years, but if the keys were generated improperly, the risk may have been present from the very beginning.
