Digital euro by 2027 – ECB plans a pilot, full rollout by 2029 The European Central Bank has just announced the timeline for the digital euro, and for the first time, we have concrete dates. What does the plan look like? - Mid-2027: A 12-month pilot with selected banks, merchants, and central bank staff - 2029: Full rollout to citizens in the euro area - Today: Technical phase – building infrastructure, testing components, and engaging with payment providers and merchants How will it work? The digital euro will not replace cash – it will operate alongside physical banknotes. Access will be through accounts at licensed banks and payment providers – just like you use your bank today, but with digital euro instead of traditional deposits. You’ll pay via an app, card, or other device. All transactions will be settled on a centralized platform managed by the Eurosystem – the ECB sees and verifies every transaction. Important point: This is NOT blockchain. The ECB explicitly acknowledges that the digital euro is not built on blockchain, but it draws on certain design principles from distributed ledgers to enhance resilience and efficiency. In other words: They took ideas from crypto, but retained full central control. Why is the ECB doing this? Straightforwardly: To protect European monetary sovereignty. Europe is becoming increasingly dependent on payment networks outside the EU – Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay, and now U.S. dollar-backed stablecoins like USDT and USDC. The digital euro is meant to be Europe’s response to the dominance of the U.S. dollar in digital payments – less dependence on Wall Street and Big Tech, more control in Frankfurt’s hands. What’s holding the project back? Regulation. The EU Council adopted its position in December 2025; the European Parliament is expected to finalize its stance around May 2026. Without legislation – no pilot. What does this mean for crypto? The ECB is doing exactly what China did with the e-CNY – building a central bank digital currency (CBDC) as an alternative to crypto, not a complement to it. The digital euro means full control, full transaction surveillance, zero anonymity. Every euro is visible to the Eurosystem. This is the exact opposite of why people turn to crypto. One gives control to the state. The other gives control to the user. By 2029, Europe will have the digital euro, stablecoins, and Bitcoin ETFs. The choice will be up to citizens. Or maybe it only seems that way?

Coinbase CEO Provides Insider Insight: “They Bought the Dips” As Bitcoin’s drop to $60,000 reignited price debates, Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong noted that customers bought during the downturn. Armstrong revealed that retail investors increased their holdings in both Bitcoin and #Ether. At Coinbase, America’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, CEO Brian Armstrong said retail investors demonstrated “strong resolve” during recent price declines and bought at the bottom. “There’s an increase in the number of Bitcoin and Ether units” The CEO stated that retail investors held firm during the downturn and treated it as an opportunity to buy: “The group of retail investors on Coinbase has shown truly strong resolve under these market conditions. According to our data, they bought at the bottom. We’re seeing increases in the number of Bitcoin and Ether units. By not selling, they’ve demonstrated strong conviction. The number of units held as of February is equal to or higher than it was in December…” In other words, although dollar-denominated balances may have declined, Armstrong points out that the actual quantities of #BTC and #ETH have risen—indicating that investors bought the dip. But he sold! While Armstrong praised retail investors for buying the dip, it’s clear he himself made significant sales in recent months. Although not involving Bitcoin or Ether, Armstrong—while serving as CEO—sold $550 million worth of Coinbase stock over the past nine months, revealing he did not maintain a strong stance as prices declined. Shares that surpassed $400 last year and set records closed Friday at $164. U.S. markets will be closed today. Armstrong’s net worth is estimated at $7.5 billion.
