More terrifying than hackers is someone standing in your living room with a gun. In September last year, a family in Minnesota, USA, was invaded by two armed men and held hostage for a full nine hours. The intruders didn’t want cash or jewelry—they wanted their cryptocurrency assets, totaling approximately $8 million. The intruders were brothers from Texas, Raymond Garcia and Isiah Garcia. Isiah forced the father to log into his cryptocurrency accounts and transfer the coins to a wallet provided by Raymond. But it didn’t end there. The brothers later discovered that the father had stored a hardware wallet in a cabin three hours away—and set their sights on that money too. Before they could get their hands on it, things took a turn: the family’s son called 911, forcing the brothers to flee. They didn’t get far. Police traced them using a Wendy’s receipt, surveillance footage from the motel where Raymond checked in, and a rented vehicle—leading them straight to the brothers’ home in Texas. In June this year, both pleaded guilty. The sentencing is now final: Raymond received 15 years, Isiah 15 and a half years. No matter how securely you store your private key, when a gun is pressed to your head, you’ll hand it over yourself.
