Brigitte Stegemann, 83, a German-born Christian grandmother known to her family as “GG” or “Oma,” lived at The Pearl long-term care home in Cannifton, near Belleville, Ontario. She had stage 4 stomach cancer, diagnosed about five months before her death. Her granddaughter, Brigitte Kranendonk, had been her caregiver for years and held power of attorney for personal care. They say she died with blood on her after a botched IV, her hands folded as if she were praying. Canada’s MAiD program is legal medical assistance in dying. The law requires the person to be eligible, capable of deciding, and to give clear, voluntary consent, including a final confirmation before the drugs are given. The family says Stegemann had already refused MAiD because of her faith. They say she wanted a natural death. After a port was placed, they allege she tore at it and said she did not want “the death shot.” Two days before the procedure, Kranendonk says she asked her grandmother, in plain language, if she knew she was going to die on Friday. She says Stegemann broke down, cried for a long time, and repeated that she had made a mistake.
