South Korea's oldest crypto exchange is now part of the $1 trillion Mirae Group family
Korbit, the first cryptocurrency exchange established in South Korea, has officially joined the Mirae Asset Group family in a historic industry shift. Mirae Asset Consulting, an affiliate of the financial giant, finalized its acquisition of a 97.15 percent stake in the platform this week. This transaction marks the very first instance of a traditional South Korean financial conglomerate securing a controlling interest in a domestic digital asset exchange, signaling a major bridge between legacy finance and the crypto sector.
Despite the significant ownership change, daily operations will remain stable for all users. The exchange confirmed that its operating entity, Korbit Co., Ltd., continues to manage the platform without disruption to trading, deposits, or withdrawals. In compliance with local regulations, customer assets remain strictly segregated from company funds to ensure safety. Mirae Asset reportedly plans to leverage this acquisition to secure future growth engines, with some reports even suggesting a potential rebrand to DigitalX to reflect this new strategic era.
This move places Korbit under the umbrella of a powerhouse managing approximately $1 trillion in assets. The acquisition, valued at over 141 billion won, underscores the growing appetite among institutional heavyweights for regulated crypto infrastructure. As the fourth largest exchange in the country by volume, Korbit now stands backed by massive capital, potentially reshaping the competitive landscape of the South Korean digital asset market.
