The most frustrating feeling in crypto isn’t getting stopped out.
It’s watching an option trade sit at +85% profit, holding out for a runner, and ending up closing in the red.
We’ve all done it. Here is why the exit matters 10x more than the entry, and how to stop giving your gains back to the market 👇
Let’s look at a realistic scenario on CoinDCX:
• BTC is hovering around $82,500.
• Strong overhead resistance sits at $84,000.
• You buy a 2-day expiry BTC $83,500 Call on CoinDCX for a $400 premium.
• Thesis: BTC tests the $84k resistance zone.
The next day, the pump happens. BTC touches $84,050.
Your contract premium jumps from $400 to $740. You’re up +85%.
Right here is where greed usually ruins the trade. You think: "If BTC pushes to $86k, this easily does a 3x. I'll just hold."
Then reality kicks in:
• BTC doesn't crash ,it just chops around $83,800 for 12 hours.
• The clock keeps ticking, and Theta (time decay) starts eating your contract alive.
• BTC pulls back just 0.8% to $83,200.
• That $740 premium collapses straight to $310.
Your directional call was right. BTC went up. But you walked away with a loss because you overstayed your welcome.
The Reality of Crypto Options
Unlike spot trading, you aren't just betting on price, you're racing against the clock.
When you hold a short-term contract past your target:
• Time decay accelerates: In the last 24–48 hours of an option contract, premiums bleed fast if price doesn't make aggressive new highs.
• Implied Volatility cools off: Once the breakout momentum stalls, option values deflate even if price just moves sideways.
In options, sideways chop at resistance hurts almost as much as a dump.
How to Decide When to Cash Out
1. Exit when the thesis is fulfilled
If your plan was to trade the move into $84k resistance, and BTC hit $84k, your job is finished. Take the win off the table (or close at least 75–80%). Never shift goalposts mid-trade just because your PnL is green.
2. Watch the momentum, not just the dollar value
If price reaches near your target but volume dries up and candles start leaving long wicks, get out. Options reward momentum, not patience.
3. Factor in the time remaining
If you captured 80% of your projected gain within the first few hours of a 2-day contract, bank it. Holding through the final stretch of theta decay just to squeeze out an extra 10% is terrible risk-to-reward.
Discipline beats greed every single time. Before you enter any trade, know the exact level where you're walking away.
