Bitcoin Breaks $85K, but the Rally Is Running Light
According to Glassnode's Week On-chain report (Week 40, 2026), $BTC pushed through the $85K resistance but has since slipped back. The breakout lacked both liquidity and fresh capital.
1. Low volume, little new money
Combined spot and ETF Bitcoin volume averages about $6.8B per day (7-day average), lower than nearly 90% of days since early 2024.
In the 30 days to Oct 5, new money (ETF flows, stablecoin growth, corporate treasury buying) totaled about $4.9B, while Realized Cap rose by about $12.8B. New money explains less than two fifths of the increase.
2. Recent buyers are taking profit
On Oct 4, BTC closed above $85K for the first time, yet about 86% of coins sent to exchanges came from short-term holders (under 155 days) sitting on profits. That is the highest share in a year.
3. Options traders lean bullish
The put/call ratio by open interest sits around 0.56, in the lower part of its 2026 range.
Since mid-August, spending on calls has outpaced puts by roughly $17M per day on average. Optimism is building, but it can turn into froth if price stalls.
4. Liquidations and order books
Only about 17% of liquidation levels sit above the current price. The nearest cluster is at $81.7K–$83.3K, followed by $75K, with the heaviest band at $60K–$63K.
Above price, the largest cluster is near $92K.
On the Binance spot book, sellers keep stacking asks around $86.5K, while the largest bids sit at $81K.
5. Macro offers no lift
After all three US data releases this week, BTC rose early and then faded within 12 hours, while the S&P 500 held its level. After the Oct 2 jobs report, BTC was 2.3% lower twelve hours later.
Since the Sept 21 breakout, the US session has been a net seller. Gains have come from overnight and weekend trading, when liquidity is thinner.
Next test: the CPI release on Oct 14.
6. Altcoin leverage looks stretched
Two weeks ago, about 70% of altcoins were beating BTC. Last week, fewer than 30% did.
Open interest relative to market cap among large-cap altcoins is at its highest since the run-up to the October 2025 crash. If prices keep falling, a forced unwind is possible.
Scenarios to watch
Bullish: Spot volume and ETF inflows pick up, with a settled close above $85.5K. That would bring the $92K area into reach.
Bearish: A break below the $81K bids would open the door to the liquidation clusters below, and altcoins like $ETH could feel the pressure even more.
