CZ says traditional banks may be more vulnerable to cyberattacks than crypto exchanges. And there's a history of incidents that makes the argument worth looking at. - In 2016, hackers breached Bangladesh Bank and attempted to steal $951 MILLION through fraudulent transfers. They successfully moved $81 MILLION. - In 2019, Capital One suffered a breach that exposed the personal information of around 100 MILLION people after a hacker exploited a misconfigured firewall. - In 2023, ransomware hackers hit ICBC, China's largest bank. The attack disrupted US Treasury trades and temporarily left its US unit unable to settle around $9 BILLION in transactions. - A 2024 IMF report also found that financial firms accounted for nearly 20% of reported cyber incidents across industries, with almost $12 BILLION in reported direct losses between 2004 and 2023. - Crypto exchanges have suffered massive hacks too, but traditional banking clearly isn't the safe haven people might assume. The question is whether banks are actually more vulnerable, or whether their breaches simply get less public attention.
