😨 Don’t Flaunt Your Wealth: Russian Programmer Kidnapped, Loses 10.4 BTC Photos of luxury cars and international travel posted on social media attracted kidnappers to a Russian programmer. According to Russian media, on September 6, five suspects abducted the 20-something programmer to a garage, where they beat and threatened him into revealing his wallet password, then transferred approximately 10.4 BTC. They also stole cash, a phone, and a computer, resulting in total losses exceeding 84 million rubles. Police have since arrested the suspects. This type of offline robbery targeting cryptocurrency holders is known as a “wrench attack”: criminals do not attempt to hack wallets but instead use violence to force victims to hand over their assets. According to security firm CertiK, 52 verified cases of such incidents occurred globally in the first half of 2026, a roughly 33% increase from 39 cases during the same period last year. Publicly reported cases this year include: 1️⃣ April: France — A family was held hostage at home; perpetrators forced them to transfer approximately €700,000 in crypto assets. 2️⃣ August: France — A man was kidnapped at home and coerced into handing over €6 million in crypto; he escaped after about two hours. 3️⃣ October: UK — A crypto trader reported that three intruders threatened him with knives, stealing approximately $760,000 in crypto and a Rolex watch. While wallet passwords can be highly complex, revealing too much personal information—such as asset holdings, home addresses, or travel plans—online can make individuals easy targets. For crypto users, “don’t flaunt your wealth” also means avoiding social media posts that expose holdings or personal locations.
