The greatest significance of decentralized platforms like Ethereum is that they offer a new alternative. One can choose to trust banks and traditional institutions, or one can choose to trust oneself. But neither option is without drawbacks. Choosing to trust oneself means accepting the corresponding responsibilities and security risks; choosing to trust banks means relying on a third party— handing over responsibility, yet also accepting their risks and rules. No solution is perfect; wanting everything is the most unrealistic thing in the world, and this is the fundamental logic long acknowledged in the crypto space: the trilemma. For most people, a hybrid approach is the most practical choice. But problems shouldn’t lead us to reject everything.
