The founder of the OneKey crypto wallet has just warned about certain security vulnerabilities in older iPhone models, which may make using these devices as cold wallets for storing crypto less secure than many believe. Specifically, iPhone models from the 4S through the iPhone X are affected by the checkm8 vulnerability, while the iPhone XS, XR, iPhone 11, and iPhone SE (2nd generation) are flagged for the usbliter8 vulnerability. Notably, these vulnerabilities reside in the BootROM—the firmware permanently embedded in the chip during manufacturing—meaning Apple cannot fix them through iOS updates alone. However, this does not mean hackers can automatically steal your Bitcoin or private keys. Exploiting these vulnerabilities typically requires physical access to the device, and attackers would still need to bypass additional security layers, such as authentication required by a wallet app. The issue is that many people assume simply buying an old iPhone, restoring it to factory settings, and disabling internet connectivity makes it a secure cold wallet. In reality, it’s not that simple—some vulnerabilities are embedded directly in the hardware.
