Getting funding from AI unicorns is no longer easy. This week, two developments in the AI space deserve serious consideration from every holder of AI stocks. First: OpenAI’s funding round shrank. OpenAI originally planned to raise $30 billion, but investors were only willing to commit around $11 billion—less than half. To complete the round, OpenAI had to reduce its target to $20 billion. Second: Anthropic received a "junk" rating before its IPO. An investment firm assigned Anthropic pre-IPO shares a "junk" rating, citing hidden liabilities estimated at approximately $900 billion. Third: What does this mean? Money hasn’t left AI—but investors are now being selective. Companies that only burn cash and tell stories are finding it harder to raise funds; those with real revenue and cash flow are becoming more valuable. Going forward, the AI industry will continue to split apart. Understanding who is making money versus who is borrowing money matters more than chasing trends.
