openai reportedly went out looking for $30 billion at a $1.4 trillion valuation. investors hit it with “seen.” so the target dropped to about $20 billion, the valuation came down to $1.25 trillion, and the first close is expected to miss even the new number. reports say they’ve secured around $11 billion so far. only in ai can you raise $11 billion and somehow come home looking embarrassed. imagine telling your parents: “yeah, i only got eleven billion. rough week.” openai builds models that retry difficult tasks with lower expectations. apparently the fundraising team uses the same architecture. attempt one: raise $30 billion. result: insufficient investor confidence. attempt two: lower valuation by $150 billion and try again. the wild part is that $150 billion vanished from the proposed valuation and the company is still worth $1.25 trillion. that’s not a haircut. that’s deleting several fortune 500 companies from an excel cell and saying “minor adjustment.” investors may finally be asking the forbidden ai question: “cool demo. where does the money go?” answer: chips. power. data centers. more chips. a tasteful amount of safety research. then chips again. openai is still raising a nation-state amount of cash. nobody is calling it broke. but the infinite-money glitch appears to have received a patch. the models keep scaling. the investor enthusiasm now has a context limit.
