In the 1995 movie Clueless, Cher picks her outfits from a computer that mixes and matches the clothes in her closet. Forerunner's Eurie Kim says the fashion industry has been chasing that closet for 30 years, and the problem was never a lack of imagination. A New York startup called Alta says it has built the closest version yet. On October 22, it announced a $20 million Series A led by Forerunner Ventures, which pre-empted the round. Kim joins the board, and Menlo Ventures and Aglaé Ventures, the Arnault family firm behind LVMH, are back as investors. Alta is an app where you snap a photo of a piece of clothing and get a studio-quality image of it. It builds your digital closet from the clothes you already own, then lets you try outfits on a virtual avatar of you. It recommends daily outfits based on your closet and the weather, plans trips and packing lists, and tracks wishlist items for price drops. It's free to use. Users have generated 700 million outfits and 20 million avatars, according to Forerunner. Alta has trained 12 AI models of its own that learn fashion at the level of single items and full outfits. The team is 10 people. The business is also selling to brands. Alta powers all the AI in Rent the Runway's app, and Fortune reports customers using Alta's outfit experience add items to their bag 12% more often than those without it. Gap and Zimmermann have run avatar try-on campaigns with it. Founder and CEO Jenny Wang built the model on one belief, that personalization works when the AI anticipates what you want before you know it. Her angels include Karlie Kloss, NFL player Paris Johnson Jr., and stylist Meredith Koop, who helped train the AI. The money goes to AI infrastructure, hiring across the consumer and brand sides, and localizing the app for new markets. Wang is working toward AI agents that read your calendar, preferences, and travel plans and shop for you. Her goal is an AI that knows what you want to wear before you do.
