Primus: Why Stablecoin Transfers Need More Privacy Stablecoins have become an important part of crypto. People use them for payments, trading, savings, and moving money between applications. But there's one issue with using them on public blockchains: transaction information is often visible to everyone. Imagine a business paying a supplier $20,000 in USDT. Anyone monitoring the wallet could potentially identify the transaction amount and follow its financial activity. This creates privacy concerns for individuals and businesses. @primus_labs is exploring a solution through Fully Homomorphic Encryption (FHE). 1. Understanding confidential stablecoin transfers Traditional stablecoin transfers expose transaction details on public blockchains. Confidential transfers aim to protect sensitive information, such as balances and payment amounts, while allowing transactions to remain functional. FHE makes this possible by allowing supported operations to happen on encrypted data without first revealing the underlying values. 2. How Primus approaches this Primus's Confidential Vault uses encrypted asset representations. For example, users can convert $U into encrypted $eU. Once converted, supported operations can be performed on the encrypted assets, including private transfers between compatible wallets. Users can also access supported yield-generating strategies before converting their assets back when needed. The objective is to make stablecoins usable without exposing every financial detail publicly. 3. A real-life example Imagine a company paying five international contractors. Instead of publicly exposing every payment amount, the company could use a compatible confidential payment system to protect sensitive transaction values. Contractors receive their payments while unrelated observers have less access to the financial details. This could be particularly useful for businesses handling payroll, supplier payments, and recurring expenses. 4. Why this matters for DeFi Privacy isn't only important for payments. It could also help protect: - Trading positions and balances. - Institutional treasury movements. - Private financial strategies. - Sensitive business transactions. However, confidential transactions still require appropriate security, access controls, and compliance mechanisms. 5. The bigger picture Stablecoins are becoming useful financial tools, but their adoption by businesses and institutions requires more than speed and low transaction costs. They also need financial confidentiality. Primus is exploring how FHE can make that possible without removing the benefits of programmable blockchain infrastructure. The future of stablecoins shouldn't force users to choose between moving money on-chain and protecting their financial information. Privacy could become just as important as speed and accessibility in the next generation of digital payments. @primus_labs
