In 2021, Google made the aquisition of a 6700000 sf lot in Beauharnois (Quebec) to build a $600M factory (2021 budget). The sector has been known to welcome big energy consumers, like a aluminum facory and big chemicals. OVHcloud used an old aluminum complex, with the power installations already in place, to add 120 MW of compute capacity. The story is different for Google. The AI giant is still waiting for connection to the provincial power grid. They are not alone, around 2,5 GW of compute power is still in queue for connection. The province of Quebec offers one of the best electricity in the world, but its scarcity is one of their biggest challenge to resolve. They have the opportunity to become an energy powerhouse.
