Chainalysis: Sub-Saharan Africa’s Crypto Market Grows 13.4% Annually According to Chainalysis’s “2026 Geography of Cryptocurrency” report, despite being the smallest crypto market globally, Sub-Saharan Africa emerged as the fastest-growing region with a 13.4% annualized growth rate between July 2025 and June 2026, reaching a total market size of $101 billion. South Africa and Nigeria together account for more than three-quarters of the region’s transaction volume. South Africa’s crypto economy surged 52% year-over-year to $39.3 billion, driven by strong growth in commercial payments and cross-border stablecoin flows, establishing it as a regional crypto hub connecting neighboring countries. Nigeria’s crypto market size reached $38.1 billion, ranking third globally in grassroots adoption. Amid regulatory shifts, local peer-to-peer platforms absorbed half of the inflows previously directed to centralized exchanges in the country, with Bitcoin accounting for 92% of small-value P2P transfers.
