OpenAI has just launched a model that performs computer tasks as well as GPT-6 Astra, at one-tenth the cost. Terra is OpenAI’s fast and affordable version. It is not the company’s most intelligent model—the Sol and Astra models remain at the top. The breakthrough is the price point that enables AI to autonomously handle computer tasks. GPT-6.1 Terra is now rolling out to Plus, Pro, Enterprise, and Edu users on ChatGPT Work and Codex. On the API, it costs $1 per million input tokens and $5 per million output tokens—half the price of GPT-5.6 Terra and GPT-6.1 Sol. This parity with Astra is based on average effort, according to OpenAI’s own tests on professional computer tasks. In these tests, Terra also completes tasks over three times faster than Astra and Sol. At maximum effort, OpenAI reports that Terra uses more than three times fewer tokens than Claude Opus 5.5, costs one-quarter as much per token, and is approximately nine times cheaper per task. OpenAI also states that the error rate on an internal set of questions designed to induce errors dropped from 53.6% in GPT-5.6 Terra to 16.7% in GPT-6.1 Terra at minimum effort, and to just 4.3% at maximum effort. If this holds true in real-world use, automating daily workflows has just become significantly more affordable.
