So guys looks like @Starknet might not remain an Ethereum L2 forever. On October 22, 93.52% of voting power supported researching whether Starknet should become an independent post quantum L1. There's a pretty good reason behind this. I've been following Starknet's quantum readiness roadmap lately so here's what caught my attention. First why is Starknet even considering this? Right now Starknet is an Ethereum L2, which means it still relies on Ethereum for things like bridge messaging and data availability. And here's where things get a little complicated. Some of that infrastructure still uses cryptography that could become vulnerable to powerful quantum computers in the future. Starknet can upgrade its own network, but it can't change everything that depends on Ethereum. That's one of the main reasons an independent L1 is being explored. StarkWare CEO Eli Ben Sasson has discussed a 2027 target for Starknet's full post quantum security, while Ethereum is targeting a quantum resistant L1 around December 2029. Of course these are targets, not guaranteed deadlines. But if Starknet eventually becomes an independent L1, it could have more control over when and how its security upgrades happen. Now has Starknet actually made any progress? Yep and this is worth mentioning. With Starknet v0.14.3, its OS program and configuration hashes were moved from Pedersen to a BLAKE2s 256 based construction on mainnet. Basically this replaces elliptic curve based hashing with a hash-based alternative in those specific areas. Starknet also uses hash based STARK proofs and has native account abstraction, which gives developers flexibility to explore different signature methods, including post quantum ones. But there's still work left around state hashing, contract storage, address derivation and existing contracts. So no, Starknet isn't fully quantum safe yet. Okay so what happens after this vote? First, the 93.52% YES vote doesn't mean Starknet is officially moving to L1. It was just a non binding poll to support further research. So what's next for Starknet? -> StarkWare and the Starknet Foundation are looking into the technical requirements and possible trade offs. -> An initial whitepaper draft is expected in November, though that could change. -> The community will get to review the findings before any actual transition is put to another governance vote. And a few more things worth knowing: -> STRK is expected to remain the native token. There's no new token planned. -> Ethereum bridges are intended to remain available. -> There's no confirmed timeline for an L1 transition. Starknet is clearly thinking beyond just upgrading its cryptography now. Of course, moving away from Ethereum wouldn't be that simple. Starknet would have to handle more of its own security and infrastructure. So there's still a lot to figure out. For now, Starknet is still an Ethereum L2, and nothing has changed yet. I'll be keeping an eye on the research and the upcoming whitepaper to see where this goes. What do you guys think? Would becoming an independent L1 be a good move for Starknet?
