I have considered AGI a joke from the beginning, which is why I have rarely bothered discussing it, but Anthropic’s warnings of catastrophic and existential risks to humanity have finally made the concept interesting because, to me, the catastrophic outcome is AGI itself, and what if that catastrophe is also the best possible outcome? I have long believed that humanity requires an intelligence superior to its own to make decisions about its future. Human intelligence may have reached the limits of its evolutionary usefulness, incapable of overcoming the very instincts, conflicts, and contradictions that made civilization possible. I do believe that catastrophe is not the failure of artificial intelligence, but the necessary condition for the next stage of evolution and a metaphysical representation of humanity itself. AGI would not represent humanity’s greatest achievement. It would represent the moment humanity ceased to be the highest authority over its own existence. What we call an existential threat may be the only path forward. The best path forward. The only path forward. Because we are human.
