Good Morning Everyone Crypto Learning Series — Day 35 What Is a DAO, and Can a Community Really Govern a Crypto Project? Imagine a crypto project where important decisions aren't made only by a CEO or a small group of executives Instead, community members can participate in decisions through a shared governance process This is the idea behind a DAO DAO stands for Decentralized Autonomous Organization It is an organization that uses blockchain technology, smart contracts, and community governance mechanisms to coordinate decisions and activities Let's understand how it works 1. How Does a DAO Work? A DAO may allow eligible members to propose and vote on decisions such as: - How treasury funds should be used - Which features a protocol should develop - Changes to project rules or parameters - Community grants and ecosystem funding The exact process depends on the DAO. Some use on-chain voting, while others use off-chain voting or a combination of both 2. Do You Need Governance Tokens to Vote? In many DAOs, governance tokens give holders voting power For example, a proposal may receive votes based on the number of eligible tokens held However, not every DAO uses token-based voting. Some use membership systems or other governance models 3. Why Are DAOs Important? - They can give communities a voice in project decisions - They can make governance processes more transparent - They allow members across different locations to participate - They can coordinate funding and community initiatives 4. Are DAOs Completely Decentralized? Not always A small number of large token holders may control a significant share of voting power. Some projects also rely on core teams, administrators, or multisignature wallets to implement decisions A vote does not automatically guarantee that a proposal will be executed exactly as expected 5. What Are the Risks? - Large holders may dominate voting - Low participation can weaken community representation - Poorly designed proposals can cause financial losses - Governance attacks or smart contract vulnerabilities may create security risks The key lesson: A DAO is more than a community chat or a governance token. Its real strength depends on how fairly decisions are made, how transparently they are implemented, and how much influence members actually have Before participating, read the governance rules and understand what your vote can change Tomorrow in Day 36: What Is Staking in Crypto, and How Do You Earn Staking Rewards? Have you ever voted on a proposal in a DAO?
