unpopular opinion: i’m slowly moving away from self custody for long term bitcoin holdings. too many hacks are happening in crypto. private keys, seed phrases, multisig wallets, phishing attacks. even the ledger connect kit incident showed how things can go wrong. taking care of custody has become a big headache. if your goal is to hold bitcoin for the next 5 to 10 years, why not consider spot bitcoin ETFs? here are 5 worth looking at and who actually handles the BTC custody: $IBIT (blackrock) → coinbase custody $FBTC (fidelity) → fidelity digital assets $BITB (bitwise) → coinbase custody $ARKB (ark 21shares) → coinbase, bitgo, anchorage $MSBT (morgan stanley) → bny + coinbase now let’s say bitcoin is trading at $80k and you want 1 BTC worth of exposure. instead of buying 1 BTC and managing custody yourself, you could invest $16k into each of these 5 ETFs. that’s $80k worth of bitcoin exposure. you don’t directly own the bitcoin. you own shares in funds that hold actual $BTC. if bitcoin pumps 50%, your $80k becomes roughly $120k. if bitcoin crashes 50%, your $80k becomes roughly $40k. simple. the ETFs follow bitcoin’s price, minus small fees and tracking differences. the biggest advantage for me is not worrying about private keys or managing multiple wallets. institutions have professional custody infrastructure, but that doesn’t mean they’re impossible to hack. even if something goes wrong, their size doesn’t guarantee you’ll be paid back. i’m personally considering keeping 5 to 10% of my overall portfolio in bitcoin and ethereum ETFs for long term exposure. not because crypto is a safe asset, but because i want to reduce my personal custody risks. and remember, buying 5 ETFs doesn’t diversify you away from bitcoin’s price risk. several of these funds also use the same custodian. sometimes having less to manage is worth more than having full control. what do you think? would you rather self custody your bitcoin or hold it through an ETF?
