There's a side of @get_optimum that deserves more attention, and it goes beyond how fast blocks can travel across Ethereum. It's about what better data propagation can mean for the entire network. When Optimum announced that mump2p was live on Ethereum mainnet, the announcement came with some impressive figures. The network had reached approximately $3.4 billion in Total Value Boosted (TVB), with 16 node operators and around 22,000 validator keys representing more than 1.4 million ETH in active stake. Optimum also reported that its early mainnet measurements showed blocks propagating 2–4 times faster than Ethereum's native GossipSub baseline, with approximately 7.88 times lower arrival variance. These numbers highlight the potential of improving how blockchain data moves across a distributed network. But there's a deeper part of this story worth understanding. Ethereum validators depend on timely information to perform their duties. When a block arrives early, validators have more time to process it and participate in consensus. This is where mump2p comes in. Optimum uses Random Linear Network Coding (RLNC) to improve how blockchain data travels between nodes. With traditional gossip-based propagation, nodes exchange messages with their peers, allowing information to spread throughout the network. RLNC takes a different approach to data transmission. Nodes can exchange coded pieces of information that help them reconstruct the original data once enough independent information has arrived. This can improve the efficiency of data distribution and help reduce delays across a geographically dispersed network. The exciting part is that network performance isn't only about achieving a faster average. Consistency matters too. When validators receive information more predictably, they have a better opportunity to process blocks and participate in consensus within the required time. There's also an important decentralization angle. Validators operate under different network conditions. Some have excellent connectivity, while others face greater geographical and infrastructure-related delays. Improving data propagation could help reduce some of these disadvantages and make participation more efficient across different parts of the network. Of course, the benefits will depend on individual conditions, but the underlying goal is important: making blockchain data move more efficiently across Ethereum. And this is why I believe Optimum deserves attention beyond its headline numbers. The technology is tackling a fundamental part of blockchain infrastructure: how quickly and reliably information reaches the people who need it. The next question is how we measure the impact of these improvements on validator performance.
