Everyone is talking about AI taking over financial trading, but the on-chain data tells a completely different story. A recent report on AI agent payments analyzed 6.4 million microtransactions on Base and Solana, totaling less than $120,000. That’s an average of just 1.9 cents per transaction, with over 90% of transactions under one cent. So what are these AI agents spending money on? Mostly paying a few cents for single web searches or checking airline mileage seat availability. It’s fine to spend a couple of cents to retrieve critical information—but most platforms still require manual pre-authorization before allowing AI direct access to your wallet for executing trades. Right now, AI isn’t a trader—it’s more like a digital intern with pocket change, running errands to buy small bits of data. Before you expect it to make money for you, first make sure you’ve got control over its small data purchases.
