Japanese has present tense (desu), past tense (deshita), and future tense (deshou); by changing the tense at the end of a sentence, you can enhance the sense of immediacy and tension. It’s normal to write past events in the past tense—so by writing past events in the present tense, the suspense and excitement come alive. The key is to use the past tense only at the beginning.
