The OpenAI eavesdropping case has escalated to the level of U.S. national security, with prediction markets一度 assigning a 27% probability of Saudi involvement. On October 13, the U.S. Department of Justice announced the arrest and initial court appearance of Abdulrahman Alfozan, a 35-year-old Saudi engineer. Around September 28, he inserted a thumb-sized recording device into the USB port of a television in an executive meeting room at OpenAI’s San Francisco office, concealing it with toilet paper. Two days later, surveillance footage captured him returning behind the television to inspect it and leaving a backpack containing a second device in another room. OpenAI used its own models to analyze the device’s origin and identified him; after handing the case over to the FBI, the company terminated his employment on October 10. OpenAI stated there is no evidence that model weights, source code, or customer data were improperly accessed or leaked.
