Papertrade: Can the Players Influence Their Own Payouts? $1.28 million of reported profit, with cash withdrawals still unverified. The house now faces a test beyond attracting losing customers. ------------------------- Yesterday, I expected Papertrade’s hype to bring customers who would fund the house through losses. Overnight reports allege that two wallets influenced ETH prices on Hyperliquid while trading much larger synthetic positions on Papertrade. The headline profit remains unreconciled to paid USDC and the cost of those external trades. The investment question now starts one step earlier: how expensive is it to influence the price that determines what the house owes? 👇 🔹What Actually Changed🔹 Boblob alleges roughly $20 million trades on Hyperliquid moved ETH by 10 to 20 basis points, alongside Papertrade positions worth hundreds of millions. Butler’s analysis reports 305 trades, 296 profitable, and an average holding time of 98 seconds. It puts remaining profit near $1.28 million after approximately $450,000 of liquidation losses. A reported profit still needs a cash trail. The available research has not independently reproduced those statistics or established cash withdrawn. A failed closing attempt also leaves its cause unresolved. By this morning, no specific team response or evidenced deployed mitigation had been located. The suggestion that the team blocked closes remains speculation. 🔹Why the External Price Matters🔹 Papertrade’s published mechanism uses Hyperliquid’s best bid and offer midpoint, the halfway point between its highest buying quote and lowest selling quote. That price determines synthetic entries and exits against Papertrade’s pool. A corresponding perpetual position is not opened on Hyperliquid. Papertrade borrows the price and keeps the payout obligation. The allegation concerns executed trades moving the external market. It should be assessed separately from an unfilled order shifting a quote inside the existing spread. At 1000x, a one basis point move, or 0.01%, corresponds to 10% of initial margin in raw position PnL. Illustrative only, before payout reductions, trading costs and liquidation rules. The economic test compares the cost of influencing Hyperliquid with the adjusted payout available on Papertrade. 🔹What Survives for $PAPER Holders?🔹 The latest reported PaperDash snapshot still shows a $5 million pool and an empty payout queue. Those are useful operating observations. A current snapshot cannot reconstruct the queue during the alleged trades or establish which winnings reached spendable USDC. The holder’s income depends on what survives settlement. If a pricing advantage can be repeated cheaply, trader losses can replenish the reserve while continuing to finance extraction. Replenishment also has an issuance consequence. Eligible losses mint PAPER. Below $2 million of tracked pool liquidity, the rate is 100 PAPER per eligible dollar lost; above that threshold, it decays. Existing holders could face both less distributable cash and a smaller share of it if further loss funded issuance outpaces the income it creates. 🔹The Strongest Countercase🔹 Profitable closes face payout reductions. Papertrade has also announced exposure controls, while moving Hyperliquid’s market involves costs and the risk of reversal. The reported liquidation loss deserves weight. The published historical trade simulation provides useful evidence under its assumptions, with an explicit caveat that customers may behave differently at 1000x. Controls matter when they erase the advantage after costs. I would upgrade the thesis if reproducible analysis of both venues showed the alleged strategy becoming uneconomic under deployed controls, alongside reconciled payouts and manageable claim delays. Until then, I would give launch activity less weight when valuing PAPER’s future income. 🔹Actionable NFA for Wise Investors🔹 I would put settlement evidence ahead of an entry valuation. ▫️ Deliberate farming commits cash before the pricing question is resolved. 📝 Pause new farming commitments until the reported activity and deployed safeguards can be evaluated. ▫️ A balance credit, queued profit and recovered USDC have different cash meanings. 📝 If already exposed, reconcile your settlements and claims with completed USDC receipts before adding capital. ▫️ Fresh losses can conceal repeated payouts from the reserve. 📝 Record comparable daily snapshots of the pool, queue, PAPER supply and rewards for an unchanged stake. Losses can fund a house. Price integrity decides whether the house keeps its money.
