She was not reinstated because she was acquitted. The professional activities of cardiologist Emma Bergonzoni, which had been suspended over disputes regarding the medical records of a boy who died after a heart transplant, have been reinstated by the Naples Court of Appeal. On December 23, 2025, a heart transplant was performed on two-year-old Domenico Carriero at Monaldi Hospital in Naples. The transplanted heart had been damaged by dry ice during transport from Bolzano, and Domenico died on February 21, 2026. Bergonzoni and the lead surgeon, Guido Oppido, faced allegations of falsifying medical records; in June, Bergonzoni was suspended for seven months and Oppido for twelve months. The Naples Court of Appeal has now lifted Bergonzoni’s suspension—not because it denied the possibility of guilt, but because it found no continuing justification for maintaining the suspension at this stage. The ruling also noted that Bergonzoni’s alleged involvement in altering records may have been intended not to conceal her own personal responsibility, but rather to shield superiors from accountability. Therefore, interpreting her reinstatement as evidence that all suspicions have been cleared is premature. In fact, a September forensic assessment concluded that there were no significant medical issues with Bergonzoni’s decision to remove the child’s original heart prior to the arrival of the new one. However, the investigation into the falsification of medical records remains ongoing. Bergonzoni may resume her practice, but the case itself is far from over. Oppido’s twelve-month suspension remains in effect, and the final determination of facts by the court is still pending.
