In 1965, at Salem Willows Beach in Massachusetts, four-year-old Roger Lausier went under. Alice Blaise went in after him and brought him back to the sand. The families went home. The beach kept its ordinary traffic of swimmers and rafts. In 1974 Roger came back to that same stretch of water, now thirteen. He saw a man in trouble, paddled out on an inflatable raft, and helped haul him in. Only afterward did the names line up. The man was Bob Blaise, Alice’s husband. The story that travels with those names is a circle drawn on one beach: a woman saves a child, the child, years later, saves the man she married. One shoreline, two pulls from the water, nine years between them: and one incredible full-circle moment.
