O people, listen and understand: whoever lives will die, and whoever dies is gone, and everything that is coming is coming... By Allah, you will surely die as you sleep, and you will surely be resurrected as you awaken, and you will be held accountable for what you have done, and indeed it is either an eternal Paradise or an eternal Fire."

(Qus ibn Sa'ida al-Iyadi)

The first part of the sermon ("O people, listen and understand: whoever lives will die...") is definitively from the words of Qus ibn Sa'ida al-Iyadi.

The second part ("By Allah, you will surely die as you sleep...") is a well-known point of overlap in historical narrations:

First narration (that it is from the words of the Prophet ﷺ): Many books of Sirah and history (such as Ansab al-Ashraf by al-Baladhiri) mention that the phrase "By Allah, you will surely die as you sleep, and you will surely be resurrected as you awaken..." is from the Prophet Muhammad’s ﷺ first sermon in Mecca when he gathered his closest relatives on Safa Mountain to warn and invite them to Islam. (Although its hadith chain has weakness according to some scholars.)

Second narration (that it is from the words of Qus ibn Sa'ida): Other sources, including the Permanent Committee for Scientific Research and Fatwa, state that there is no authentic elevated attribution of this wording to the Prophet ﷺ; rather, this phrasing is reported as a well-known continuation and tradition from the words of Qus ibn Sa'ida.

The most probable conclusion:

The textual overlap occurred because the Prophet ﷺ himself narrated Qus ibn Sa'ida’s sermon to his companions, marveling at its eloquence and his belief in resurrection before Islam;

The first part is definitively from Qus ibn Sa'ida,

While the second part became widely known in historical tradition as part of the Prophet’s ﷺ first public sermon to Quraysh, and others also attribute it to Qus due to contextual similarity.

The text of the Prophet Muhammad’s ﷺ first sermon in Mecca,

Which he delivered to his closest kin among Quraysh atop Safa Mountain after the revelation of the verse: {And warn your closest kindred.}:

The text of the Prophet’s ﷺ first sermon in Mecca: After gathering his people and praising and extolling Allah as He deserves,

He said: “Indeed, a scout does not lie to his people. By Allah, even if I were to lie to all people, I would never lie to you. And even if I were to deceive all people, I would never deceive you. By Allah, there is no god but He—I am truly the Messenger of Allah to you specifically, and to all humanity. By Allah, you will surely die as you sleep, and you will surely be resurrected as you awaken, and you will be held accountable for what you have done, and you will be rewarded with good for good deeds and evil for evil deeds; indeed, it is either eternal Paradise or eternal Fire.”

Key lessons and meanings from the sermon:

Trustworthiness and established honesty: He began by drawing an analogy with the “scout” (a person sent by a tribe to find rain and pasture for survival), affirming that he would never deceive his own family or tribe.

Universality of the message: He clearly declared two aspects of his mission:

Specifically for the people of Mecca and his kin,

And universally for all humanity.

Clarifying the concept of resurrection:

He used the simile of sleep and awakening to facilitate understanding of death and resurrection,

Since Quraysh denied bodily resurrection.

Certainty of recompense: He emphasized the duality of accountability (justice and retribution),

And that the ultimate fate is confined solely to eternal Paradise or eternal Fire.
