Blockchain TPS: Why the Biggest Number Does Not Always Win
Transactions per second, or TPS, measures how many transactions a blockchain can process within one second.
Higher TPS can help a network support more users, reduce congestion and handle applications such as payments, trading and gaming. But published TPS figures may refer to theoretical capacity rather than sustained real-world performance.
TPS also does not capture the full user experience. Transaction finality, fees, decentralization, security, reliability and hardware requirements all matter.
A blockchain processing thousands of transactions quickly is not automatically better if those transactions are costly, unstable or controlled by a limited validator set.
Speed matters—but only as part of the broader design.
