Lido's stETH Rebase Is Running Below the Headline Number

Stakers who have been looking at their daily rebase of stETH have noticed that the yield is not what they were expecting.

Lido's stETH is rebaseable daily, typically at 12:00 UTC, by taking into account validator performance and rewards on the consensus layer.

The current protocol yield, according to major yield trackers, is around 2.51% APY, and the model is predicting it can be pushed down to approximately 2.0% over the next couple of weeks, depending on network conditions.

That is the main problem with anyone who is comparing the marketing with what is in their own wallet. APR rates have been mentioned elsewhere on Lido's institutional pages but are a snapshot of the rate, not a set rate.

The Ethereum staking yield rises and falls with the amount of ETH staked, validator uptime, and MEV conditions, and they are all subject to change.

Let's examine the gap; a few mechanics explain it. The amount in your wallet is already after Lido's 10% protocol fee, which is divided among the node operators and the DAO treasury. Daily print is also pulled down by validator penalties, although those are rare.

There's a larger story of structure that is going on here. Lido's market share in the Ethereum staking sector has declined over the past few periods, and this year, its withdrawal list has reached over 235,000 stETH.

The more ETH that is waiting to be removed, the greater the pressure will be on the secondary markets from the side of supply, apart from the rebase maths.

None of this is indicative of the fact that stETH is broken. It does not guarantee a return, but rather is a rolling average, typically calculated over the past seven days, which helps reduce the noise from daily fluctuations.

Those looking for yield should always use the calculator on Lido's website based on the current APR, not what they remember, and should include the 10% fee in calculations when comparing to other staking opportunities. This isn't financial advice.
