Durov launches a non-custodial Gram wallet in Telegram: a new stage for the TON ecosystem
Telegram founder Pavel Durov announced plans to integrate a built-in non-custodial Gram crypto wallet into all messaging app applications. The launch is expected to occur in summer 2026 and will be one of the largest crypto wallet integrations among a mass audience.
The key feature of the new solution is the non-custodial model. This means users will independently control their private keys and digital assets, while Telegram will not directly store users' funds. This approach aligns with the fundamental philosophy of Web3: asset ownership remains with the user, not a centralized intermediary.
According to Durov, the integration will enable Telegram users to conduct instant cryptocurrency transactions with minimal fees. Thanks to the messenger’s enormous user base, the new wallet could potentially significantly expand the audience for digital assets.
For the TON ecosystem, this could become the most important event since the project transitioned from an experimental blockchain to a full-fledged Web3 infrastructure. Telegram has long been the primary channel for distributing TON services: from payments and mini-apps to gaming projects and decentralized services.
If the built-in wallet truly becomes available to billions of users, it could change the conventional cryptocurrency usage scenario. Today, most people encounter digital assets through centralized exchanges, where they must create accounts, undergo verification, and entrust custody of funds to a third party.
Telegram’s model offers an alternative path: cryptocurrency becomes an embedded feature of a daily-use application. Users will be able to interact with digital assets as easily as sending a message or using built-in services.
However, the new product will also face several challenges. The primary concern is user security. Non-custodial wallets provide full control over assets but simultaneously require users to independently manage their keys. Loss of access means loss of control over funds.
Moreover, large-scale integration of a crypto wallet within Telegram will inevitably attract regulatory attention. International requirements for combating money laundering and controlling digital assets are becoming increasingly strict, making the balance between decentralization and regulation a key factor in development.
For the market, this event holds broader significance. Telegram could become one of the first global applications where cryptocurrency is embedded not as a separate service but as a foundational financial function.
If the launch succeeds, Gram Wallet could accelerate mass adoption of Web3 and make digital assets part of everyday use for millions of people.
For TON, this is not just a new wallet—it is an attempt to transform a blockchain ecosystem into a full-fledged financial platform within one of the world’s largest communication apps.
