Bitcoin Dominance Holds at 56.5%: What It Says About Where Capital Is Really Flowing in 2026
As per CoinGecko, Bitcoin is currently 56.5% dominant over the crypto industry, with the market cap of the cryptocurrencies totaling $2.33 trillion. To summarise, approximately 56 cents of each dollar invested in cryptocurrencies is tied up in Bitcoin.
Well, the number is just as it is. The idea is what is trending around it. For months, the Altcoin Season Index has been below the 75 level it usually hits when a real change in its nature to altcoins occurs.
Bitcoin dominance reached as high as 60.66% earlier this year but has remained in the range it's in now.
A part of the story is ETF flows. Since then, spot Bitcoin ETFs have attracted tens of billions of dollars of capital, which is largely held in Bitcoin and not just reinvested in smaller tokens as it has been in previous cycles.
More and more capital goes into the institution in one place, and that place is BTC.
Dominance figures could be skewed due to stablecoins, which have a huge share of the market cap but are not really a part of risk-on altcoin activity.
It isn't always the case that a flat or upward reading of the Dominance chart indicates that altcoins are being "crushed," as it may be a reflection of how the denominator is structured.
However, the practical read for traders is very simple. There's been no general trend for capital to switch this cycle into altcoins like there was during previous bull runs.
While meme coins make massive short-term moves, and individual altcoins make large short-term swings, Bitcoin continues to be the default destination that retail and institutional flows go to.
This is not financial advice. Dominance metrics are just one indicator and can't be relied upon solely for determining the best time to buy and sell altcoins.
Are you optimistic that this dominance will be more significantly surpassed before year-end, or will Bitcoin remain in the lead through 2026?
