sbi just bought regulated distribution into southeast asian crypto markets. on july 17, SBI Holdings said it received MAS approval and completed the acquisition of a majority stake in Coinhako, making the Singapore platform a consolidated subsidiary. Coinhako operates through a Major Payment Institution license, giving SBI a compliant regional foothold instead of another infrastructure pilot. the market-structure signal is distribution. SBI can combine Coinhako’s customer base and local operating know-how with its banking, technology and digital-finance network, then connect Japan and Southeast Asia through stablecoins, tokenization, on-chain finance and cross-border services. exchange ownership is becoming a strategic asset: regulated access, liquidity corridors and product distribution in one layer. the risk is execution. MAS and other regulators can still limit which assets and services reach customers, and integration can weaken the local edge SBI is buying.
