Solana's Alpenglow Upgrade: The Data Behind a 12-Second-to-150-Millisecond Finality Claim
Visa card authorization is done in 1-3 seconds. Solana's goal is to close a transaction more quickly than that, and the upgrade has already garnered almost full support from validators.
At Consensus Miami 2026, Solana’s co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko said that Alpenglow, the largest consensus change to date, could deploy on the Solana mainnet by the end of Q3 2026.
The upgrade received over 98% of the votes from the Solana validator set, which is an unusually high level of support for a change this fundamental.
The numbers that follow the claim are specific. Alpenglow is a replacement of the two systems in Solana (Proof of History and TowerBFT) with two new systems called Votor and Rotor.
Votor reduces the current 32-round voting procedure to 1 or 2 rounds, which is 80% and 60% of validators, respectively, and targets the time to be around 100 milliseconds and 150 milliseconds, respectively. This is 80-100 times faster than Solana's 12.8-second finality baseline today.
On the other hand, Rotor introduces a new Turbine propagation layer to the Solana blockchain based on stake-weighted relays and erasure coding, which completes block propagation in simulations within around 18 milliseconds.
Beyond simply reordering transactions faster, Yakovenko has also noted another effect on the economy of MEV, which refers to validators trying to reorder transactions based on the time difference between them and profit off the reordering.
SOL has been trading around $75 to $77, much below the all-time high price of around $293 during January 2025, this week. Not just the roadmap, whether or not Alpenglow moves that needle will depend on execution.
The upgrade is slated for Agave 4.1 in Q3 of 2026; security audits will follow until Q4, and the full mainnet deployment will take place prior to the end of the year.
This roadmap has been delayed once before and so should be read as 'as soon as Q3' rather than 'absolutely the 3rd quarter'.
