The Math of Maritime Protection: A Costly Contradiction
Former President Trump recently slammed Iran’s proposed $2 million toll for transiting the Strait of Hormuz as "unacceptable." His alternative? The U.S. Navy will secure the critical chokepoint instead for a 20% "reimbursement" fee on cargo.
The math, however, exposes a massive financial irony:
The Asset: A fully loaded Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) carries roughly 2 million barrels of oil. At $75 a barrel, that is $150 million of crude in a single hull.
The Iranian Toll: Iran’s reported 10% transit fee would cost a carrier $15 million (or a flat $2 million under their initial baseline).
The U.S. Protection Rate: A 20% tariff imposed by the U.S. would skyrocket the cost to $30 million per tanker.
