Pyth Network (PYTH) Deep Dive: The Oracle War Against Chainlink — Who Is Actually Winning in 2026?
Overview
Pyth fetches price data directly from wherever it's published: exchanges, market makers, and trading firms. Pyth receives price data directly from exchange, market makers, and trading firms, which refresh roughly every 400 milliseconds.
PYTH has come back to its mid-dollar figure of $0.048, reviving the market cap from $381M to a current circulating supply of 7.9B out of a max supply of 10B, a healthy 96% above its all-time lows and 96% below its peak price in March 2024 of $1.20.
The "Pyth Core Upgrade" is scheduled for July 31, which will move the network from a free access model to a paid API subscription model, beginning at $500/month, with the revenues split between the PYTH Reserve (for buybacks) and the developer.
Team & Backers
Pyth is the creation of a group of brokers, including Jane Street and Jump Crypto, that worked together in 2021. In 2023, Douro Labs was a key contributor, working on infrastructure, while the Pyth Data Association was established to guide the development of the ecosystem.
Use Case
Pyth is integrated into power and derivatives protocols where a 1-second stale price can be a significant disadvantage. It's gone beyond crypto, and now on to equity data, crypto FX and commodity data; and it has just landed a new integration with Nasdaq TotalView to distribute institutional equity data on-chain.
Competitors
Despite this, Chainlink is still considered the king when it comes to raw value secured (currently around $33.1B, or 505 protocols on DeFiLlama's oracle ranking), as compared with Pyth's current total of roughly $3.08B across 305 protocols.
However, Pyth's chain count (100+) is outpacing Chainlink's expanding footprint in newer, non-EVM ecosystems, and it's doing it in the derivatives lane in particular.
Risks
That's a one-sided market share of raw TVS, and Pyth remains dependent on Wormhole for cross-chain messaging. The transition to paid data is untested – if it fails, so does the buyback flywheel.
Outlook
Pyth is not getting the better of Chainlink at Chainlink's game. It's making speed-sensitive derivatives and also a novel institutional data lane. But is that a market big enough that it matters, is the question.
