most people entered web3 looking for fast money. very few were willing to do the technical work that actually creates it. everybody wanted the airdrop. almost nobody wanted to understand the contract distributing it. everybody wanted the yield. almost nobody wanted to audit the protocol generating it. the opportunity was never in the hype. it was always in the gap between how many people wanted the reward and how few were willing to do the work underneath it. that gap is still wide open.
