The risk in renting frontier AI was never that it isn't smart enough. It's that you don't hold the off switch. On June 12, a US export directive forced Anthropic to suspend its two most capable models. The order targeted foreign nationals, so the company disabled them for everyone to stay compliant. No warning, no way to segment access. Live one minute, dark the next. For three years the AI debate was about capability. It has now turned into a question about access. A model you rent can be switched off by someone who isn't you. A model you run can't.
